Nursing Home Quality's Accredited QIS Instructors have completed a rigorous 5-day QIS course that requires execution of QIS protocols, including gathering and analyzing survey data. Accredited Instructors are authorized by Nursing Home Quality to conduct the Basic QIS Course and are also contracted to assist NHQ in providing the Basic QIS course with professional associations.

1-Day Basic Training

Nursing Home Quality’s 1-Day Basic Training is an educational program that details the QIS process used by state surveyors and teaches providers how the QIS tools and procedures can be used in their quality assurance and improvement programs. The 1-Day Basic Training has been completed by over 3000 nursing home professionals. This interactive “how to” workshop will provide training in how to use the QIS tools for ongoing quality improvement.

Led by Nursing Home Quality QIS Instructors, this course includes a general orientation and introduction to the QIS process, as well as a point-by-point comparison of the QIS with the traditional survey process. The course also provides in-depth training on the use of CMS QIS forms and procedures for Stage I, Facility Tasks, and Stage II investigation. Course registrants will receive guidance on how the QIS forms and procedures can be used by nursing facilities in their ongoing quality assurance efforts. Finally, the latest experiences with the QIS are discussed.

1-Day Intermediate Training

This seminar builds upon the 1-Day Basic QIS Training by providing a detailed exploration of the ways in which nursing facilities can utilize the QIS tools, protocols and concepts in their ongoing quality assurance (QA) efforts. Course registrants will learn practical, effective techniques for developing continuous survey readiness – in anticipation of either the QIS or traditional survey. Throughout the course, illustrative resident scenarios will be used as a framework for in-depth discussion of the use of the QIS for QA purposes. Utilizing these case scenarios, the morning session will focus on QIS Stage I assessment scoring and results interpretation, and the afternoon session will delve into the use of Stage II investigation protocols for targeting QA efforts. During the afternoon, students will be given the option of selecting one of two tracks -- Quality of Care or Quality of Life -- each of which will focus on issues emphasized under the QIS.

The 1-Day Basic Training is a prerequisite for this course.

2-Day Practicum Training

Take the next step in QIS training with Nursing Home Quality’s 2-day in-facility practicum. The 2-Day Practicum provides individualized instruction in the QIS method, as well as hands-on field instruction and immersion in the application of the QIS Process. Participants will receive instruction on the use of Nursing Home Quality’s web-based quality assurance system, abaqis. At the completion of the 2- Day QIS Practicum, registrants will have received guidance on the implementation of a comprehensive quality assurance system within their own facility.

The 1-Day Basic Training is a prerequisite for this practicum.

4-Day Intensive Training

Become a highly trained QIS specialist in your company by participating in our most comprehensive QIS Training Course. During Nursing Home Quality’s 4-Day Intensive Training, attendees work closely with an instructor in a nursing facility to learn how to apply the abaqis system and QIS process. Attendees will conduct interviews with residents, families, and staff, and review charts under observation. The course provides in‐depth training and individualized instruction on the QIS, as well as hands‐on field instruction in the application of the QIS process. Participants will receive instruction on the use of Nursing Home Quality’s abaqis Quality Assurance System, which replicates the QIS process and analyzes assessment results using QIS thresholds.

When the training is complete, course participants will be able to use and apply the QIS tools and procedures for quality assessment and improvement within their own facilities. They will be knowledgeable in Nursing Home Quality’s Web‐based abaqis Quality Assurance System, and will be able to guide fellow staff in the use and implementation of this system.
